Weekend getaway in Barrington Tops
Immerse yourself in the World Heritage-listed Gondwana Rainforests of Barrington Tops National Park. Most of Barrington Tops National Park is declared wilderness; large, natural areas of land that, together with their native plants and animal communities, remain essentially unchanged by modern human activity. Wilderness areas in NSW represent the largest, most pristine natural areas within NSW – the last of Australia’s wild and untamed places. In this wilderness retreat, one can hear the chirping of birds early in the morning and feel the swaying breeze playing hide and seek between trees. Easy walks, overnight hikes, great picnic, fishing, and camping spots await. There are also great adventure tours for kayaking, abseiling and mountain biking.
Gloucester River Winery boutique vineyard is situated on 30 acres by the Gloucester River. It grows and produces wines with no added preservatives. The on-site cellar creates small lot vintages of 200-500 litres. The wine is handpicked and handcrafted in the cellar and not in the laboratory The wine varies from year to year. The tastes of each year are driven by the climate, which cannot be manufactured through blending. The wines are very much faithful to both the variety and the growing conditions.
Gloucester River Winery is set amist the most scenic setting of any winery in the Gloucester valley. You’ll love the intimate views of the stunning Buccan Buccans (the Bucketts Mountains).
Set high up in subalpine woodland, escape to the Polblue campground. It’s a spacious campground centered around a picnic area with trees and bushes and set away from the main road, making it ideal for camping with kids. Apart from the scenic tent sites, the campground has caravan and camper trailer sites. It is a beautiful option for a weekend getaway. Some of the Barrington Tops National Park attractions are easily accessible, including the easy Polblue Swamp walking track which is a simple one that kids will love.
You’re likely to see a kangaroo or wombat hanging out along the track as you walk the Polblue Swamp track. The perfect time to see them is early morning as they graze through the woods for some brekkie. The nearby Barrington trail should also be tried out by four-wheelers.
A great family day trip to the majestic Gloucester Tops area in Barrington Tops National Park, close to Gloucester, is the Gloucester Falls walking track. On this short and easy stroll, the kids will enjoy a different experience with wonderful views of beautiful trees, mountains, and waterfalls.
The trail leads from the picnic area of Gloucester Falls through sub-alpine snow gum forests to the Andrew Laurie lookout, where you can glance all across Gloucester River and rocky forest gorges to the eastern Mountaineer peak. A second lookout provides scenic views of the picturesque Gloucester Falls, where the river plunges down to the valley below over the plateau. The twin drops, after rain, are breathtaking.
